Our final week of school has finished with our Years 9–11 Prize-giving and a lovely evening of Carols on the Quad led by Director of Music Robert Aburn, accompanist Nick Sutcliffe and the 80-strong choir.

I would like to thank the boys, our wonderful staff and our incredibly supportive parents for another great year in the College story.

Gillette Cup national cricket finals

Fittingly, stumps to this amazing year may just be called by our 1st XI Cricket team as it represents us at the prestigious Gillette Cup national secondary schools one-day finals next week at Lincoln University.

Best wishes for the Christmas and New Year period. I hope you enjoy the following snapshots of College life, taken over the past few weeks.

Giving Day

Thank you to all our donors

Thank you to all of our community for supporting Giving Day. We have raised a remarkable $1,139,053 towards restoring Upper.

This exceptional result has been made possible by our many significant matching donors. We have been the recipients of the following:

  • Roland Stead Bequest, and other major gifts – $444,000
  • Twenty named plaques for Upper West – $500,000 ($25,000 each)
opportunities still exist to join this special programme of support. Should you be interested, please contact Garth Wynne.
  • Donations on Giving Day – $195,053

You have helped to set up the sporting enjoyment and success of generations to come. Your donations will enhance Upper to create a better, safer surface to train and play on all-year round – a turf truly worthy of our soon-to-be-completed, multi-purpose sports centre.

We will provide regular updates as work on Upper West and the surrounding grounds steps up over the next year.

Round Square Conference 2023 – Nairobi, Kenya

Boys can apply to attend the annual Round Square Conference for students aged 16–18. It will be held at Brookhouse School in Nairobi, Kenya, from 8–14 October 2023. (They will miss the first week of Term 4 at College.)

From past experience, College boys have found the global conference to be an exciting and enriching experience. The boys will meet students from all over the world, take part in group discussions, undertake service and adventure activities and hear from inspiring speakers. Up to six College students can attend the conference, accompanied by two staff members.

The cost of the trip is about $7,500 per student, including flights, a likely game reserve visit, conference fees, accommodation and meals. Vaccinations for various diseases will be required, along with malaria medication.

If your son is interested in attending the Round Square Conference in Kenya and you want to find out more, please email rdonaldson@christscollege.com by 5pm on Friday 10 December 2022.

            Finding Your Pathway

Year 11 – Finding Your Pathway

Using computer games to investigate supply chain management, powering up on spin cycles while viewing innovative technology and considering the science of the cow have all set the scene at Lincoln University for future career pathways.

Under College’s inaugural Finding Your Pathway programme, Year 11 students have been visiting Lincoln University, the University of Canterbury and Ara – Te Pūkenga.

At the University of Canterbury, the boys have been zooming around with drones as they enhance their skills during a visit to the innovative lab in the Ernest Rutherford building.

              Service Week

              Year 10 – Service Week

Year 10 students have dug deep during Service Week, clearing out and cleaning up animal areas at Orana Wildlife Park under the watchful gaze of giraffes, rhinos, water buffaloes, emu chicks, meerkats, and a few grateful pigs. Clutching spades and large brooms, the boys have spent several days helping staff at the popular park at McLeans Island.

The boys have also been improving the local environment in Silverstream, the Styx Living Lab, Streat’s Bush in Cashmere, community gardens, the Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park, New Brighton, and Avoca Valley, and have packed food boxes, supported young parents, and decorated the Christmas tree at Burwood Hospital.
