House Plays Condells 238 9539

A home within a home: Belonging, care, and competition at Christ’s College

As I draw my first year at College to a close, one aspect stands out clearly: our House system, and the pastoral care it enables. I believe that this truly sets us apart, not only from other schools in our region, but across the country. Whether a boy is a boarder or a day student, we are deeply committed to ensuring his wellbeing and growth, both inside and outside the classroom.

There is no question that one of the greatest challenges facing communities in New Zealand today is the mental health and overall wellbeing of our young people. Much of this, I believe, stems from a sense of disconnection from community life. Teenagers, and boys in particular, thrive when they feel a genuine sense of belonging, when they have the opportunity to form strong connections, and when they are part of something greater than themselves.

At Christ’s College, our 10 Houses embody this principle. They are, in many ways, the lifeblood of College. Ask our boys, especially the seniors, what they value most here, and many will speak of their House before even mentioning College itself. I sometimes wonder whether their loyalty to their House rivals their loyalty to the school as a whole.

Our House structure is not only unique within New Zealand; it is distinctive even by international standards. Each House is a ‘home within a home’, built on the foundation of connection and belonging, elements that are essential to the development of any teenage boy. The Houses are also the primary framework through which we deliver pastoral care. Indeed, our teacher-to-student pastoral care ratio is unmatched anywhere in the country. This is no accident, but the direct result of our deep-seated belief in personalising each boy’s educational journey and ensuring that no student feels unseen or unsupported.

Beyond pastoral care, our Houses also nurture what we proudly call ‘positive competition’. Anyone who has attended House events, whether House Music, Athletics Day, or House Plays, will have witnessed the energy and good-natured rivalry these occasions inspire. The competition is fierce, but it is infused with mutual respect and a shared commitment to excellence. These events are not simply contests; they are celebrations of talent, teamwork, and the vibrant spirit that defines our College community.

In essence, our House system is far more than a structural feature of school life, it is the heartbeat of College. It fosters belonging, drives engagement, and ensures that every boy knows he has a place, a team, and a community to call his own.

Timely change for IBW

We are introducing a small change to how we share our College newsletter, In Black & White. From this week, IBW will be sent at 4pm on Wednesdays during term time. Previously, IBW arrived in inboxes at 8am. Shifting to the afternoon gives our team more time to prepare the newsletter and we believe it will create greater engagement with our College community.

New Harper Housemaster for 2026

Acting Head of Commerce Robbie Turrell has been appointed Housemaster of Harper House, taking over from Neil de Joux, who will step down at the end of this year.

A proven pastoral and team leader, Robbie will join Harper House in February 2026. At present, he is the Deputy Housemaster of Julius House, having taken on the role this year. Originally from London, England, Robbie has been living in New Zealand for nearly 14 years.

His initial career pathway led to the financial markets in London. Robbie then trained to teach ESOL and worked in Mexico and Spain before undertaking a PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) teaching degree in Sheffield, England. He taught at a comprehensive school outside London for seven years as the Head of Business Education and IT. Overdue notices – by the book

What should parents do about overdue library books? Under our library system, a parent receives the same overdue emails as our students. We know these emails can be repetitive. However, our system is not capable of distinguishing between a reminder for a book that is a few days late, and one that is so overdue there is about to be a charge. We also know you do not want a surprise bill for a book that is simply sitting in the car, forgotten by a teenage brain.

Our overdues system sends students five reminder emails before anyone is billed for a replacement copy. They are sent once a week, so a book is at least five weeks overdue before there is a bill. The replacement cost is then added to the next fee statement.

In general, it is fine to leave it to the boys to manage their books, until you see an email with the subject ‘Final Library Overdue Notice’. That is the one that can result in a bill, if ignored, and you will need to remind your son to ensure that the book is returned or renewed promptly.

Zooming in on global perspectives

Our Junior Round Square committee has hosted a very successful Zoom Postcard – the first from New Zealand schools involved in the international network. It has brought together 80 students from 11 schools across three countries.

A way for students to experience global diversity and broaden their perspectives without leaving school, the 90-minute interactive, student-led Zoom Postcards build international understanding, dispel stereotypes, and cultivate respect for other cultures.

Our junior committee includes Year 11 students  Louis Sharr, Gus Elworthy, Ollie Trollip, Sebastian Wynn-Thomas, Charlie Syme, Lucas Zhang, Angus Sharpe, Lucas Zhong, Hugh Davis, Chris Yoon, and Paddy Laidlaw; Year 10 students Gabriel Onions, Lucas Hu, and Ryan Tian, and Year 9 students Thomas Rankin and Henry Pottinger.

Our boys have introduced the students to College, outlined the theme of ‘empowering student-led initiatives’, run a Q&A section with Head of International & Round Square Benson Geng-Wang, and overseen separate ‘baraza’ groups. They have facilitated discussion about successful student-led activities, the challenges, and how both students and their schools can encourage youth leadership. We have received wonderful feedback on our ‘postcard’ and the boys’ success in facilitating meaningful and inclusive conversations.

A week of high-level winter sport

Christ’s College is proud to be hosting the Independent Schools Rugby Festival on Upper from Saturday 23 August to Monday 25 August. This prestigious event will bring together some of New Zealand’s leading rugby schools in a celebration of tradition, talent, and school spirit.

College will open the festival against King’s College on Saturday at 3pm, before taking on St Paul’s Collegiate on Monday at 11am. These matches promise to be high-quality contests and a great opportunity for our community to come together in support of the 1st XV.

At the same time, Winter Tournament Week gets under way across the country from Sunday. College will be strongly represented, with teams competing in basketball, cycling, football, hockey, and rugby, covering a range of age groups, and giving our boys the chance to test themselves against the best in New Zealand.

It will be an exciting week of sport for College, both at home and nationwide. We encourage the whole community to get behind our teams, whether on the sidelines at Upper or following their progress around the country. To stay up to date, please check the College website Winter Fixtures page. This will be updated regularly with results.

We are hosting three specialist sport clinics in the upcoming school holidays for Years 7–8 boys with a passion for cricket, tennis, or volleyball. We are also offering five fully funded places at each sport clinic for boys planning to apply for a 2027 Sport or General Excellence Scholarship at Christ’s College. The two-day clinics will be run by leading Christ’s College coaches and offer youngsters the opportunity to improve their skills and develop their talent while having fun with friends and like-minded players. Spaces are very limited, with registrations closing at 5pm on Friday 19 September.

Please share this wonderful opportunity with friends and family.

Southern Jam and all that jazz

Performing around Blenheim and lighting up the Southern Jam Jazz Festival, the Christ’s College Big Band and Jazz Combo have showcased a range of remarkable talents and musical styles.

During gigs at wineries, cafes, and bars, the boys have shared their unique approach to the genre – from the Latin American-inspired Running with the Bulls to the free jazz experimentation of Tutu. The young musicians have also competed against the best bands in the South Island in the Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo categories.

Both bands have been awarded ‘Gold Certifications’, with the Big Band named runner-up, and Year 12 student Oscar Stove recognised as the Most Outstanding Trumpet Player and Year 11 student  Kourosh Langley as the Most Outstanding Saxophone Player. Both Kourosh and Oscar were section leaders in the All Stars Band, a feature of the Gala Concert.

Among the overall highlights was the performance of Tutu, with the bongo solo from Charlie Saunders and trade-offs between trumpet players Marcello Ferguson and Oscar Stove simply electric. Another highlight came at the Gala Concert, with the Jazz Combo performing Little Sunflower, including improvised solos by all players and Kourosh Langley on bass guitar. First-timer Cole Moffatt also lit up the stage with his voice and style on guitar and piano.

A trio of extraordinary Overton brothers

There are many remarkable Old Boys’ stories in the Archives, and, sometimes, it takes an outside inquiry or a donation to bring one back into focus.

Recently, Richard Overton – grandson of one of three brothers who attended Christ’s College in the late 1800s and early 1900s –faced a decision: What should he do with the College cups, awards, and 1st XV photograph of his grandfather, Charles Fitzroy Overton?

After talking to the school archivist, Richard consulted his family, and prepared to visit College to donate the items. The archivist then began in-depth research into the Overton family. After utilising existing collections – photographs, artwork, obituaries, Registers, and school and form lists – some extraordinary stories emerged.

Thanks to Richard Overton and Charles' granddaughter, Sue Upston, these taonga will be preserved, and serve as a reminder to current and future students, and Old Boys of those who have come before, exemplifying their determination, achievement, and bravery.

The oldest brother, Percy John Overton (1542), served in both the Boer War and World War I. A captain in the Boer War, he was the recipient of  the Queen’s Medal (three clasps) and the King’s Medal. While later serving as a major in the North Canterbury Mounted Battalion, he was killed in action at Gallipoli on 11 August 1915.

Charles Fitzroy Overton (1661) featured in both the 1st XV and the 1st XI from 1897–1898. He also held the College high jump record, won the Old Boys Champion Cup, the Ballantyne Cup, and the Old Boys Race, and was a member of the Canterbury athletics team. Among the donations to College are those same cups and medals.

Guy Stanley Overton (1662) was Head Prefect, a member of the 1st XV for four years and the 1st XI for three years, and the Cadets captain. Guy also lost his life at Gallipoli, just a day before his brother, Percy, on 10 August 1915. Sadly, the family at home heard about the death of the brothers, one after the other.

GS Overton, 1st XV 1903
Christ’s College Register, December 1915
GS Overton, presented by Ethel Overton. College Archives

The obituaries in the December 1915 Register list the two Overton brothers and their gallant last moments on the battlefields of Gallipoli. Guy died of wounds on the hospital ship Delta. He had been hit by Turkish machine-gun fire on Walden’s Knob. Percy was killed in action while leading the Sikhs and Gurkhas.i

On the 110th anniversary of the deaths of Percy and Guy at Gallipoli, great-nephew Richard Overton, and Sue Upston and Jim Upston donated the 1897 1st XV photo, medals, and cups belonging to Charles Fitzroy Overton to the College Museum.
